This Week In Travel: Rocking out with sharks and high-tech planes

#1 Rock & Roll All Nite and party with the coolest concert goers ever

Think of the greatest rock concert of your life. Want to top it? Well, come 18 November, an intimate group of eight very lucky people will bear witness to the most mind-blasting concert experience ever. Rock legends KISS are playing live off the coast of South Australia for their biggest fans – great white sharks. These magnificent beasts have a soft spot for low-frequency headbangers and the lucky eight will get to rock out with the sharks from inside a submarine while the band play live just above. Tickets are surprisingly affordable at US$52 per person and go on sale 6 p.m. EDT on 14 October.

Not too long ago, Cathay Pacific confirmed that they were recording passengers via CCTVs in airport lounges and near the cockpit door, as well as logging your in-flight entertainment usage. Well, Airbus wants to take the aeroplane of the future a step further and get to know you even better. Including how long you spend in the lavatory. Each seat will also come pre-programmed to fit your needs and wants including reclining preference, meals and in-flight entertainment. Oh the bother of having to lift a finger to press some buttons or speak to crew members in person.

#3 The dangers of flying aren’t always what you think

Up to eighteen passengers on a recent flight from San Francisco to Charlotte, North Carolina may have been exposed to Hepatitis A. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this treatable liver disease that spreads very quickly from person-to-person through contaminated food or water. Symptoms include stomach pain, dehydration, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). The best way to protect yourself against the virus is by getting vaccinated as it also prevents recovered patients from being reinfected. No, seriously aeroplane builders, how about some high-tech sanitisation instead?

Would you spend the night inside a blimp? Well the Goodyear Blimp that has provided aerial coverage of college football games in the United States since 1955 will retire into the College Football Hall of Fame later this year and it will be available for booking this 22, 23, and 24 October. It will only cost you US$150 per night with overnight accommodation for two persons. You’ll also get to invite four of your friends up into the blimp during the day and you will have access to a lakefront camping spot complete with grill, fire pit, and other essentials. Guests will also win game tickets to the big game later in the week.

#5 Please ensure that you check-in your nail-clippers, tweezers, and Katana

So, a man tried to board a plane with a sword in his carry-on bag. Not just any sword, but a katana to be specific, a Japanese sword with a single edged, curved blade that is known to be very sharp. If you don’t already know, all weapons are forbidden from being taken into the cabin, and even nail clippers are generally confiscated if found. The man was travelling to Sao Paolo and had thought the value of the sword would permit him to bring it in his carry-on. He was made to check it in and no harm was done. Close, but nothing beats the man who tried to take a missile launcher through security in July.
