8 things to do in Singapore: September 2018

#1 Mid-Autumn Festival

What: Ahead of Mid-Autumn Festival on 24 September, Singapore will light up with moon-viewing parties and beautiful lantern displays. Gardens by the Bay, for one, will launch lantern displays alongside cultural performances, Chinese craft showcases and a food street. Another place to visit during the festival: Chinatown! We’re certain shopping malls won’t be bereft of lights, either.

#2 Ballet Under the Stars

What: If you missed the first weekend of performances by The Singapore Dance Theatre, catch the second leg, which is dedicated to the late famous ballet choreographer Choo-San Goh – the company will perform Unknown Territory, Schubert Symphony, and Fives, which are some of the Singaporean’s best works. #3 Time Out Cocktail Club: Shanghai Nights

What: For one night only, the Astor Bar at The St. Regis Singapore will be transformed into a 1930s-style Shanghai bars. Four of the country’s top mixologists – Astor Bar’s Christian Chavez, Tippling Club’s Andrew Loudon, Mona Lounge’s Sam Wong, and Junior’s Ronan Keilthy – will each create a drink, which you can enjoy alongside Chinese-inspired canapés and Peroni beer. #4 Shakespeare’s Globe

What: Twelfth Night, The Merchant of Venice, and The Taming of the Shrew – three of Shakespeare’s funniest works, performed by the famed UK theatre’s tour group, right here in Singapore. For the two final shows on Saturday, 22 September, the audience will decide which play gets staged! Buy tickets here.

#5 Jimmy Carr

What: The stand-up comedian is bringing his dark, deadpan British humour to the stage, with a lifetime’s worth of his best jokes in tow. Any fan will know that his jokes are 18+, are crafted for the open-minded audience, and will leave you in stitches. Limited tickets still available.

#6 Movies by the beach at Sentosa

What: Open-air cinemas – don’t we love them? This time around, Sentosa Island is screening a handful of films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and the like) on various dates, and you can bring the whole family together for an evening of snacks and blockbuster appreciation, pending good weather. You can watch the movies for free, but island admission charges apply as usual. See the lineup here.

#7 Singapore Grand Prix

What: Ah, the biggest car race in the world – where some people get excited over who’s performing off-track as much as which driver makes pole. The Killers, Jay Chou, Liam Gallagher and Dua Lipa are among this year’s headliners at the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix concert. More information here.

#8 The Piano Guys

What: Pianist Jon Schmidt and cellist Steven Sharp Nelson kicked off The Piano Guys’ success on YouTube nearly 10 years ago with their medley cover of Taylor Swift’s Love Story and Coldplay’s Viva La Vida. Their inspiring music videos now translate onto the stage, where they will perform their renditions of well-known hits and cult classics from movies. Buy tickets here.
