Postcard From Here: See Bella Koh Find Snowy Serenity and Slow Living in Hokkaido

Singapore-based creative, wellness advocate, and mother Bella Koh traded tropical city life for the snow-capped Hokkaido, travelling with her daughter to The Vale Rusutsu and Intuition Niseko.

Known for her unique approach to slow, mindful living, Bella Koh (@catslavery) has built a community around conscious wellness and honest reflections on motherhood. Last winter, she set off on a special journey with her 9-year-old daughter to Hokkaido, Japan.

She embraced Japan’s famed powder snow, cosy onsen evenings, and the ease of travel made possible by The Luxe Nomad’s signature service. From snowmobiles to soulful café stops, here’s how Bella found balance in the Japanese winter.

Tell us why you chose to travel to Hokkaido?

We had long wanted to be close to the snow and had always heard from friends about the stunning beauty of Hokkaido and its powder snow! This was our third season in Niseko, but our first time in Rusutsu, thanks to The Luxe Nomad’s recommendation.

What did you love most about your trip with The Luxe Nomad?

The outstanding and consistent service, paired with the staff’s genuine interactions with guests.

What was the most impressive thing about The Vale Rusutsu?

The location! The properties had everything we needed — cafes, shops, and an onsen, too. It was super convenient for accessing the snow activity land, allowing us to squeeze in 2 to 3 activities in a day.

And how about Intuition in Niseko?

We honestly could have easily spent our time in Intuition without skiing! The room was beautifully designed with large windows that let in plenty of sunlight, brightening our winter days. It’s great that the bedroom was fully separate from the living area — a cosy spot to sleep during winter and we had a wonderfully restful night!

Can you share personal recommendations on how to best enjoy Rusutsu?

Riding a snowmobile is a must for the breathtaking views it provides! If you’re too tired to venture far after a day of skiing, Yo Chan restaurant is just a short walk from the hotel. Hop onto The Vale’s private car for a ride right to their doorstep!  Finally, pick up a book (I recommend Reconciliation by Thich Nhat Hanh) or start journaling in the serene snowy atmosphere at Seed Bagel Company Coffee Cafe in The Vale.

Finally, any favourite finds in Niseko?

March is a great time with plenty of lovely cafés and fewer crowds. My daughter and I love the Dohyo Doughnuts mini donut truck right outside Rhythm Summit. We also enjoy the baked goods at Mountain Kiosk Niseko, located right by the Grand Hirafu slopes!

For a filling meal, take a drive from The Vale Rusutsu to enjoy lunch at Houzuki Udon before continuing to Intuition Niseko. Just a heads up, it often sells out by 12 noon — they open at 11 am! Another great spot is Tempura Araki which offers one of the best tempura experiences you’ll ever have! You might not want tempura from anywhere else after this. Just a gentle reminder to leave the kids at the hotel, though! Haha!

For skiwear, check out Holiday Project. They have everything you need for a stylish ski experience! And finally, relax with a book in the lovely suite at Intuition. I recommend “The Hidden Life of Trees” by Peter Wohlleben. Afterward, enjoy a refreshing afternoon onsen!
